Dance floor size calculator
Enter your guest count to see the dance floor you need, in square feet and in the 3 × 3 ft panels rental companies use. The rule of thumb is about 3 sq ft per guest, so 100 guests need an 18 × 18 ft floor.

“Aim for” is 3 sq ft per guest. “Floor” is the smallest square of 3 ft panels that covers it. Below the “crowded” figure people spill off the edges from the first song. “Bars” is one per 100 guests, so the line doesn't empty the floor.
Where the 3 square feet comes from
At most weddings about a third of the guests are on the floor at any one time. It peaks after the first dance and in the last hour, and drops while dinner or the cake is going on. Each dancer needs roughly 9 to 10 sq ft to move without stepping on anyone. A third of your guests at 9 sq ft each works out at 3 sq ft per guest.
Count the guests who'll be there for the dancing. If some leave after dinner, or more arrive for the party, use the evening number.
Go a size up if…
- Your crowd really dances. Lots of friends in their twenties and thirties, a great band and an open bar can push it from a third to half the room.
- You have a live band. Guests bunch up in front of the stage, so the floor fills from one end.
- There's line dancing or a hora. Big circles and lines take far more room than a club-style crowd.
…and a size down if
- Many guests are older or have small children, and the evening is more about conversation.
- You've hired a floor for a smaller group and the venue has hard floor around it that guests can spill onto.
Rental floor sizes
Portable dance floors are built from 3 × 3 ft panels, so they come in 3 ft steps: 12 × 12, 15 × 15, 18 × 18, 21 × 21, 24 × 24 ft and up. Most companies will also build rectangles, like 15 × 21 or 18 × 24 ft, which suit long rooms and tents better than a square. Quotes are usually per panel or per square foot, plus delivery and install.
White and black gloss floors look great in photos but scuff easily. Wood-look floors suit barns and tents. The finish doesn't change the size you need.
Leave room around the floor
The floor is the easy part. What makes the room work is the space around it. These are the rules the planner checks as you place things:
- About 4 ft of walkway between the floor and the nearest chairs, so guests can get on and off without squeezing past people eating.
- About 5 ft between tables, edge to edge, so two guests can push their chairs back at the same time.
- The DJ or band on one edge, close to power and away from the grandparents' table.
- The bar near the floor but not on its edge, or the line becomes part of the dance floor.
- About 4 ft clear in front of every door and fire exit.
These are planners' rules of thumb, not a fire code. Your venue's capacity and exit rules come first, so share your floor plan with them before you book the rental.

Or start from a hotel ballroomQuestions
What size dance floor do I need for 100 guests?
About 320 square feet, which is an 18 × 18 ft floor. Plan on roughly 3 sq ft per guest: about a third of your guests dance at once, and each dancer needs around 9 to 10 sq ft.
How many guests does a 15 × 15 dance floor hold?
A 15 × 15 ft floor (225 sq ft) suits a wedding of about 70 guests, with around 23 people dancing at once. It starts to feel crowded with more than about 100 guests.
What size dance floor for 150 guests?
About 480 sq ft. In standard 3 ft panels that's a 24 × 24 ft floor, or 21 × 24 ft if the room is tight.
Can a dance floor be too big?
Yes. A floor more than about two and a half times the size your guest count needs looks empty early in the evening, and an empty floor is hard to be first on. If the venue's built-in floor is huge, bring the tables in around it.
